Tubbercurry Tidy Towns Project Springs into Action
[
27 April 2008
]
|
|
| |
This will become an annual event forming part of an on-going plan to transform Tubbercurry's visual appearance and environment. Many exciting ideas are in the process, which will be developed with the objective of maximising the potential of the town's environment, as well as move Tubbercurry up the National Tidy Towns points table. Among the recent initatives undertaken as been the hiring of a professional landscaping designer to develop an overall planting version for the town's future. The Tubbercurry Tidy Towns committee has also made personal contacts with the town's business community in regards to looking at their property/shopfront with a fresh eye and to undertake any visual improvements if needed. Not only to the main shop/building facades, but just as importantly near entrances and loading bays onto the Circular Road which remains the main visual point of contact with Tubbercurry for passing motorists. With uncertain economic times looming ahead, it is vital that Tubbercurry put it's best side forward and work even harder to improve the visual image of the town. This is important for boosting the long-term economic profile, making Tubbercurry a more desirable place for people to live, shop and do business.

Major Tubbercurry Landscaping Design to be Unveiled
[
29 February 2008
]
|
|
| |
Next Wednesday (March 5th) at 8PM at Teach Laighne on Humbert Street, the Tubbercurry Tidy Towns Group are requesting as many local citizens as possible to attend the public unveiling of the town's major new landscaping project for the next five years and beyond. This will be the best chance for locals to offer their opinion and keep abreast of the latest proposals. A professional landscaping designer has been hired to develop an overall planting vision for the town's future. The meeting will set in motion the planting of trees, shrubs, flowers and various other design features. Come along and bring a friend - this will be an event for the entire community.
The Tidy Towns group thanks to a continuing excellent working relationship with FAS, have repainted the former graffiti covered wall on the site of the old signal box at Tubbercurry Railway Station. A local artist has designed and donated a large, hand-painted sign with an image of one the final freight trains to use the line in 1975. This graphic will remind motorists who travel along the Circular Road of the town’s former rail transport heritage, as well as clean-up a long neglected location. May even bring back a few childhood memories for many of the towns residents. The sign will be installed within the coming weeks.
On going rejuvenation of various neglected spots around Tubbercurry is part and parcel of the Tidy Towns project. If citizens have any creative ideas to restore and brighten up certain locations around the town, highlight local history and culture, then the Tidy Towns group are always delighted with any input and suggestions.
If you have any questions or would like to get involved call Thomas Sheridan at : 071-9186136

Tubbercurry Badminton Club revert to 1 club night
[
11 January 2007
]
|
|
| |
Tubbercurry Badminton Club – As mentioned in the last Newsletter (October 2006) the club were happy to inform members that on foot of representation within the club, the club was to play two nights per week. Opinion on this was sought and the greater number of members opted for Monday and Wednesday as the two nights. To date however, uptake has been very modest and with only two courts in use each night there was and expressed feeling that, in effect, the club was being split. With the New Year here now there is a necessity for action and after determining the hall availability in the January to April period, the committee decided to revert to one night per week during that period. Effective from Monday 8th January 2007 and each Monday thereafter, the Club will meet from 7.30pm – 10.30pm.

]
|
|
| |
Sligo ladies football team won the All Ireland junior final last Sunday and a great welcome home was given to the victorious team when they arrived back to the Square in Tubbercurry on Monday evening last along with friends and family. Nearly 1000 supporters greeted the team coach and after various votes of congratulation the players mingled with family and supporters. Speakers on the stage included Mary Barry, President of Tubbercurry Chamber of Commerces, and John Murphy. Chairman of Sligo County Board. South Sligo was strongly represented on the panel including Captain Angela Doohan, Doocastle, Katrina Connolly, Achonry, Tracey O’Hara, Tullinaglug, Cammie Kennedy, Tubbertelly, Helena Haran Cloonacool, Noelle Gormley, Bunninadden, Therese Marren, Curry, Louise Brett, Carrowreagh Knox, Aisling McTiernan, Carrentubber, and Bernie McGowan, Tourlestrane. Tourlestrane man Paddy Henry was manager. After the heartbreak of being beaten in two previous finals, this was a great achievement for the girls and the county is proud of them
Laura Gillespie, twelve year old daughter of John and Mary also played in Croke Park last Sunday as she was chosen on one of the teams of mini games played during the interval of the All Ireland final. This was a great honour for Laura as she already plays on the county under twelve team along with club mate Caoimhe Gallagher.
