Congratulations are extended to Angela & Gerry Burke, Tubbercurry who celebrated their 50th Wedding anniversary last week-end.  Their family Michael, Patricia, Paul & Pierce along with in-laws and grandchildren helped make the occasion a joyous one and best wishes for many more years of health & happiness are extended to Angela & Gerry.

Congratulations are extended to Pierce and Anne Henry, Rocklands, Tubbercurry who celebrated their 40th Wedding anniversary last week-end.  The occasion was marked by a party with family & friends.  The happy couple are planning a world trip in the near future.

Sympathy is extended to Anne Killoran, Tubbercurry and Tommy Regan Chaffpool and their extended family on the death last week of their sister Bridie Regan.  Aged 74 Bridie lived in Sligo but for many years and was a regular visitor to Killorans Traditional Restaurant.  Over the years Bridie got to know many of the locals and clients of the Killoran Business and she was never afraid to help out when the occasion called.  A nurse by profession, Bridie spent many years in America and also ran a pub in Sligo along with her brother Tommy.

Bridie’s remains were removed to Sligo Cathedral and burial took place in her native Strokestown, Co. Roscommon.  She is survived by sister Anne Killoran, Maura Kenny and brothers Tommy & Stephen Regan, in-laws, nephews, nieces and many friends.  May she rest in peace.

The Golf Club hosted their Captain’s Day Competition last week-end and this years captain John Gillespie pulled out all the stops to provide a great days competition & entertainment.  The club is looking excellent at present and is a credit to all the hard working committee and staff.

This years winner was Martin Donoghue (Jnr.) from Charlestown.

The death occurred recently of Jack (Johnny) Coleman of Carramore, Lavagh.  In his early 80’s Jack was a well known figure around Tubbercurry as he worked for many years up until his retirement in the Accounts Dept. of Connacht Gold (NCF). Jack’s pleasant manner endeared him to everybody that came into contact with him and his community work was also a model for others to follow. After he retired from Connacht Gold he pursued his hobby of farming and again this revolved around his beloved Carramore and Achonry Creamery.  Just a few short months ago Jack his wife Tessie lost their son Michael through illness. This time family, friends and relations gathered to mourn the passing of Jack.  The sympathy of the entire community is extended to Jack’s wife Tessie, daughter Patricia, sons David, Leo, Kieran, Dermot and many in-laws, grandchildren & friends.  May he rest in peace.

Best wishes are extended to Helen of Austin’s Restaurant who has opened a new jewellery & bric a brac store on Wolf Tone square called ‘U Star’.

The death occurred on June 17th last of Gerry Buckley, late of Ougham, Tubbercurry.  In his early 70’s Gerry was a native of Macroom, Co. Cork and married his wife Mary (nee Durcan) from Tourlestrane in England.  They returned from England about 30 years ago and since then Gerry worked in a number of jobs in Sligo and Knock as well as in Tubbercurry.  He worked for many years in Tubbercurry Motors on the petrol forecourt and it was there most local people would have got to know him.  Gerry never lost his strong Cork accent which made an impression on all who chatted him while they topped up with petrol.

Gerry has been ill for the last few years but enjoyed great support from his loving family.  His remains reposed in the Coen funeral home on June 19th prior to removal to the Church of John the Evangelist that evening.  Burial took place the following day in Rhue cemetery after solemn requiem mass.  Sympathy is extended to his wife Mary, sons Gerard & John, daughters Maura & Patricia, brother, sisters, in-laws & friends.  May he rest in peace.

June - I’m Not There (15A) (USA / 2007 / 135min)Dir. Todd Haynes

In keeping with the impossible-to-pin-down nature of Dylan himself, Haynes chose to cast six different actors to portray several incarnations of the groundbreaking troubadour. The result is a challenging, sprawling work that spans several decades and genres. Haynes artfully draws a portrait of the artist at the points when his life and music intersect. He achieves this with a depth of curiosity and a good sense of humour, drawing on myths, suppositions, interpretations and facts without actually mentioning the name Bob

Community Notes - Wednesday 3rd June 2008 [ 03 June 2008 ]

The Black and Tans commandeered her during their reign of terror 1919-1921 and now a government Dept. of today’s Government is using her for administration purposes.

Howleys House on Teeling Street beside the Bank of Ireland has certainly seen many changes since it was built nearly one hundred years ago and if walls could talk we could learn a lot of the history of Tubbercurry.

Built in the early 1900’s by a local business family, Howleys, it was a fine commercial and residential premises at a time when money was scarce and political turmoil existed throughout Ireland.

The Irish people were fighting for independence in the early years of this great houses existence and when the British Government sent the Black and Tans mercenary force to Ireland to squash the War of Independence, they took over Howleys great premises for their South Sligo H.Q. On September 30th 1920 when an RIC convoy was ambushed at Chaffpool by the IRA, it resulted in an R.I.C mans death.  The Black and Tans went wild in Tubbercurry that night. After looting the pubs and shops of liquor they proceeded to burn a lot of the town with the result that many residents feared for their lives and fled to friend’s houses outside the town. Howleys house was only saved that time because it was occupied by the Black and Tans.

When Ireland got its Independence the house was handed back to the Howley family and various family members lived and worked there until the 1950’s.

The premises were vacant for much of the 50’s and 60’s. It was used briefly in the mid 60’s as a factory/assembly area but that did not work out and again it was closed up and began to look sad and drab.

In 1968 the premises was bought by two Cloonacool men, Kieran Mullarkey and Michael Rowley and they set up Mullarkey and Rowley Hardware.

They established a fine hardware business and many Cloonacool men found employment there for the next 20 years. Disaster hit the premises again in 1988 when a huge fire in the paints department gutted the property. Down, but not out, Kieran and Michael re-opened within a few weeks operating out of a few sheds in the yard while reconstruction slowly took place.

The premises again changed hand in 1995 when Mullarkey and Rowley retired out of the hardware business and sold to local builder Michael Leonard from Moylough. Leonard Hardware Supply operated out of the premises for the next 10 years until they moved to new purpose built premises on Circular Road. Michael Leonard then converted the old premises into purpose built office accommodation and now the Dept. of Community, Gaeltacht and Rural affairs has just occupied it, albeit supposedly on a temporary basis. This Government Department are already in offices  just 100 yards further up the street in a new office block also provided by Michael Leonard. Eammon O Cuiv is minister of the Department and is now a regular visitor to Tubbercurry. Minister O Cuiv is of course a grandson of Eammon De Valera who was an Irish freedom fighter and politician at the time of the Black and Tans occupation 90 years ago. These old premises, originally Howleys house, are now a state of the art office block with the most modern computer equipment. It comprises 9000 sq feet accommodation and will accommodate up to 50 staff. As civil servants continue to de-centalise in this Government department from Dublin and other areas, there will be approx 115 extra people working in Tubbercurry between the two office premises.

This is a great boost for Tubbercurry so hopefully we can retain them here in town. As for Howleys house, she has gained a new lease of life and is looking forward to her new role accommodating Irish Civil Servants, rather then Black and Tans.

Home for an extended holiday from the United States is Frank Mannion, formerly of Connolly Park. Frank grew up in Tubbercurry in the 1940’s and gained a great love for greyhounds and horses from his legendary father Jimmy. Indeed he was to follow a career in horses that brought him first to Curragh, then to Britain and eventually to the United States where he will tell you he experienced every emotion possible in the colourful world of horse racing. As an apprentice jockey in the Curragh in the 1950’s he rode and worked for the famous trainer of the day P.J Prendergast before then going to Britain to work in the stables of some of the greats around Epson, Newmarket and Doncaster.

A chance meeting with an American trainer opened the way for Frank to move to the United States where he was to work for the last 40 years. Racecourses such as Kentucky and Belmont to name but two were some of many racecourses Frank rode in over his long career. In 1978 Frank rode in the international steeple chase in Camden, South Carolina and Michael O’Hara who was commentating on the race took pride in referring to Frank as a true son of Tubbercurry. Other household names in that race included John Joe O’Neill, Mouse Morris and Charlie Fenwick who later owned and rode Ben Nevis when winning the Aintree Grand National.

Frank lived and worked for a number of years at Arlington Race Course near Chicago. In New Orleans his met up with Leon Spinks, a one time famous boxer who has now hit on very hard times. Louisville, home of Mohammed Ali was also a regular race venue for him but his favourite race venue was in the Bluegrass Country of Kentucky.

He saw Seattle Slew and Affirmed win the last racing Triple Crowns in the late 1970's in America and feels that this Triple Crown Victory will be repeated this year by the horse of the moment in America Big Brown. This horse has already won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes and will shortly be going for the Belmont Stakes in New York.

At a stage in life now when many people would be thinking of retiring and putting their feet up, Frank is thinking about getting into a few horses at home.  He still rides out horses regularly in America for trainer Bill Cesare a former professional American football player. Anybody with time on their hands and with an interest in horses will thoroughly enjoy the company of Frank Mannion.

Sligo County Council are ready to commence works at Wolf Tone Square to install a storm water pipeline from the surface water drain opposite Burkes garage to a new water system at the bottom of Humbert street. It is hoped that this will go a long way to resolving flooding problems which have occurred over the years in a number of business premises on the West side of the square. There will be a certain amount of traffic disruption while the works are ongoing but it will be for the long term good.

This weeks film at the mobile cinema at Teach Laighne on Thursday 5th June The Savages    (15A) (USA / 2007 /114min) Dir. Tamara Jenkins
When they learn that their estranged father Lenny (Philip Bosco) is slipping into dementia, his middle-aged son and daughter, Jon (Philip Seymour Hoffman) and Wendy (Laura Linney), move him from a sun-parched retirement community in Arizona to a modest care home in snowbound Buffalo.
Shocked out of their cosy but stifling comfort zones, they must care for a father who never cared for them, while dealing with their festering sibling rivalries. In a subtly directed, performance-dominated film, Linney, Hoffman and theatre veteran Bosco make the most of every word, expression and gesture.

"Two fine performances, a subject close to all our hearts and a screenplay that manages to be both brilliantly witty and almost unbearably poignant add up to the best family comedy-drama since Little Miss Sunshine."      -Neil Smith Total Film Thursday 5th June Tobercurry 8.30pm  Thursday 12th June-Before The Devil Knows Your Dead(16) (USA / 2007 / 117min)Dir.
