Community Notes from Tubbercurry

Community Notes - 17th February 2010 [ 17 February 2010 ]

BEEZNEEZ BRING MORRIE TO TUBBERCURRY - Lovers of top class theatre have a real treat in store when Beezneez Theatre Company bring their touring production of Tuesday’s with Morrie to St. Bridget’s Hall, Tubbercurry on Sunday night next February 21st.  Tubbercurry is the third venue of a ten venue national tour of the play and if reaction to the production so far is anything to go by, this is one evening of theatre that should not be missed.  The company have received standing ovations in Manorhamilton, Enniskillen and Roscommon for what is a warm and moving story of the relationship between a professor and his pupil.  Of course, the Tubbercurry visit is almost a home game for Beezneez as director, John McDwyer is synonymous with the town and the performers, Michael Roper and Pat Feely are both South Sligo natives and well known for their work, not alone with Beezneez, but with Phoenix Players and Everyman Theatre.  John McDwyer says that the performances in this production will linger in the memory for a long time and he doubts if better will be seen on stage this year.  A play with huge acting and technical challenges, Tuesdays with Morrie, gets the full Beezneez treatment and the company are looking forward to bringing the production to Tubbercurry.

Booking for the show is now open at 071 9620224.

Phoenix Players back on the Road - Rehearsals have been underway since well before Christmas for The Phoenix Players forthcoming Festival Production.    This Year’s Play is “The Mai” by Marina Carr and is being directed by our own renowned Director Peter Davey.

The Play is one of Marina Carr’s best known Plays and deals with the relationships between a Family.

The Play will be performed in St. Brigid’s Hall, Tubbercurry at 8.30.p.m. on Sunday the 28th February before the Group embark on the Festival Circuit where they are partaking in Seven Festivals.

Community Notes - 10th February 2010 [ 10 February 2010 ]

Local businessman Charlie Scanlon is having great fun with some of his greyhounds at present, winning races on various tracks around Ireland with a number of good dogs. Tracks at Lifford, Galway, Limerick and Shelbourne Park have all witnessed recent victories of the unassuming Charlie. His most recent victory was last week in Limerick when he won the final of a top grade 750 yard stake with a young bitch called Kilscan Belinda. This is a top quality greyhound and Charlie can be seen regularly on the highways and byways around Tubbercurry walking and talking to his charges. Kilscan Belinda has attracted interest from top owners and trainers in both Ireland and England, but Charlie has so far rejected all offers. He hopes to emulate the achievements of other famous Tubbercurry greyhound trainers like Charlie Faul and Luke Kilcoyne to win a classic event in Ireland. Well done Charlie.

Beezneez Theatre Group back in Tubbercurry a treat is in store for Drama Fans when Beezneez Theatre Company return to Tubbercurry with their current production of “Tuesdays with Morrie” by Jeffrey Hatcher and Mitch Albom. The Play is based on the hugely successful Novel by Mitch Albom.   A superb night’s entertainment is guaranteed.   The Play is a two-hander and features our own local Actor Pat Feeley and Michael Roper in the two main roles and is directed by John McDwyer.   This is a poignant tale mixed with humour and has many lessons for us all. There is one performance only in St. Brigid’s Hall Tubbercurry on Sunday the 21st February at 8.30.p.m   Tickets can be booked by telephoning 071 9620224.

Tubbercurry & District Coursing club held a very successful 3 day coursing meeting over the Jan 14-16 weekend despite poor weather conditions. The event had to be postponed from 2 weeks previously due to the severe weather. The meeting which was held on the grounds at Tubbercurry attracted top quality greyhounds from all over Ireland and the club are to be congratulated on their success.

Dublin train users from Tubbercurry and South Sligo generally have been complaining about the poor state of the road, which is especially bad between Bunninadden and Ballymote. Several students returning to Dublin colleges have missed trains due to punctures obtained on this particularly poor stretch of road. Frost damage done at Christmas and early January is the culprit. The advice therefore, until this road can be repaired is if you are going to the train leave in plenty time and make sure your spare wheel is in good condition. In the meantime our county councillors might speed up these upgrades.

St. Attractas School Ladies Cadet basketball team (U-16) is going very well at present, having got into an All Ireland semi final as a result of recent wins over schools from Ballinrobe and Terenure. The semi final will be played early March so congratulations are extended to all the team and their coach Ms. McHugh. Ladies football is also going well with some of the teams in Connacht Semi final stages. Progress reports will be available over the coming weeks.

Community Notes - 20th January 2009 [ 20 January 2010 ]

The end of 2009 and early 2010 will certainly go down in the annals of Tubbercurry as a time to remember or perhaps more correctly a time to forget, due to inclement weather.  At this stage it is estimated that hundreds of thousands of euros worth of damage was done as a result of leaking water thanks in attics due to frost induced bursts.  This estimate may eventually go into several million euro.  Snow fell in Tubbercurry and South Sligo on the Saturday night prior to Christmas December 19th and that snow has layed on the ground well into the third week in January, an entire month.

While it was cold and snowy in the days leading up to Christmas, people could get around albeit slowly, main roads were clear for visitors to get home for Christmas to family.

The real cold set in on Christmas eve and many people woke up on Christmas morning to find water supplies frozen in pipes and some pipes had burst.  However the first real damage was done on Christmas night when temperatures around Tubbercurry dropped to -11degrees Celius with the result that many houses which were vacated and had little heat or water usage suffered damage that night and on subsequent days.

There are dozens of houses which were vacant over the Christmas – New Year period which suffered from €50,000 - €80,000 worth of damage including structural work, contents and personnel belongings.  The full scale of damage done to houses was only realised when people returned to houses after being on holidays.

Frozen pipes and interrupted water supplies have caused real hardship in many cases throughout South Sligo.  Coupled with slippy and snow packed roads, the inclement weather conditions have been trying for all concerned.  Insurance Assessors and loss adjusters will certainly be busy over the next few weeks as will builders and tradesmen as the repair work commences.  Snow and sub zero temperatures have continues on and off into the third week of January.  Schools could not re-open on their due date after Christmas but St. Attractas Community School and most Primary Schools in South Sligo got open a week late January 14th.  The school transport system has been severely disrupted due to slippy secondary roads and many social functions were cancelled or postponed due to weather conditions.  Between floods, fronts and snow, this winter is certainly on to remember and we are still only in January.

A number of robberies have taken place in commercial premises over the last few months in Tubbercurry, the latest one being in an office on Teeling Street where a quantity of money was taken.  Business owners are advised to be extra vigilant with security measures and a financial investment in alarms and locks could be the best investment you could make in 2010.

Dog owners are strongly advised to keep a careful watch on their pets. This time of year is for some reason a time when dogs group together in packs if they are allowed roam.  Sheep owners in Tubbercurry and South Sligo are very fearful or dogs seen on the loose and many farmers will shoot dogs to protect their flock. The death occurred on Jan 3rd last of Mrs. Mary Ruttledge (nee Coleman) in Baileys Nursing Home.  In her 98th year, Mary was resident in Baileys for the last number of years after moving  there from her home on Charlestown Road, Tubbercurry.  Born in 1912 near the foot of Knock na Shee in Lavagh, she lived most of her married life with her late husband Jack at Carraisle near Templehouse, where they farmed and reared their family.  On retiring Mary and Jack moved to Tubbercurry.  The family suffered their share of bereavement throughout the years, losing a daughter Mary and son Patrick who actually died in the line of duty as a Garda.  Mary was ill for the last number of years but was very well cared for by the staff of Baileys Nursing Home and by her daughter Kitty.  Her remains reposed at the Morahan Funeral Home prior to being brought to the Church of St. Joan the Evangelist Tubbercurry on Jan. 5th.  Burial took place on Jan. 6th in the family plot at Court Abbey cemetery.  Sympathy is extended to her daughter Kitty, sons David, Richard, Jack, Michael, nephews, nieces & many relatives.  May she rest in peace.

New Book of Local Poetry- My Father’s Barn is a newly published book of poetry by Bernadette McCarrick (formerly Cloonbaniff). The book will be officially launched locally in The Mountain Inn, Coolaney on Friday 30th of October. Bernadette will read from her work and signed copies of the book will be on sale on the evening. Anyone with an interest in this piece of work in particular or in poetry in general is welcome to attend. The book will be available at usual local outlets in the coming weeks.  Hereunder are a few quotes which should wet the appetite and give an idea of the type of works: “The barn stands a few yards from the dwelling-house in its red roof and door, its whitewashed walls and gable.  In my father’s time, which spanned almost a century, the barn was his domain: a roomy, neatly-kept storehouse for the countless resources useful to farming life long before the age of mechanization.”

“The double door was wide enough to take a cart.  On wet days my father worked there sawing sticks for firewood, mending the teeth of broken rakes, or oiling his beloved bike.  You could always step into the barn out of a heavy shower, or keep watch for the bread-van on a cold evening through its one small window.  Decades ago, on summer nights, the neighbours borrowed the safe-keeping of our barn for the kettles and pots they used for cooking their dinner on the nearby bog”

“This book of poetry is a barnful of memories: a simple storehouse for the experiences of farm and family life during my childhood in the fifties and sixties.  It focuses on my father, Harry who died on Saint Stephen’s Day 2008, a few weeks after his 97th birthday.”

Best wishes to Andrew Jordan from Charlestown who has taken over the management of ‘The Forge Bar’ on The Square.  The Forge was run for the last 5 years by David and Judith Bailey who contributed hugely to the social and business life of Tubbercurry and David and Judith are extended best wished in their career change.

Congratulations are Extended to the Tourlestrane Senior football team on an excellent victory in the County Final and continued success to them throughout the Connacht Championship campaign.

Sympathy is Extended to the family of the late Francis Brennan, Ballincurry, who died on 27th September last following a brief illness. A popular man in the South Sligo Community, Francis farmed in Ballincurry and was also an insurance agent for many years. A regular visitor to Tubbercurry through his work, he will be missed by all who knew him. May he rest in peace.

Sympathy is extended to Catherine Gallagher and her husband Jimmy of Cashel South, on the unexpected death of Catherines Brother Mattie Clarke of Templeboy. Mattie was well known in farming and construction circles and his sudden death reminds us all of the delicacy of life. May Mattie rest in peace.

Sincere Sympathy is Extended to Germanus Whittington, to Pauline his wife and daughter Anna on the recent death of Germanus’s mother Bridie of Bellaghy, Charlestown. The Whittington family have been well known down through the years to older Tubbercurry natives as they were street vendors in the days of Fair Days and Markets not alone in Tubbercurry but in many towns in Sligo and Mayo. The sympathy of the entire community goes out to the entire Whittington family on their loss. May she rest in peace.

Cead Mile Faitle is extended to Fr. Dan O’Mahony  who has recently arrived in Cloonacool as curate to replace Fr. John Geelan. Fr. Dan is no stranger to Cloonacool/Tubbercurry as he was posted for a number of years as a young priest in Tourlestrane and if memory serves correctly he won a Sligo Co. Championship medal with Tourlestrane in 1978. Perhaps Fr. Dan could make a comeback and tog out in 2010 for either Cloonacool or Tubbercurry. Tourlestrane’s new priest Fr. John Flynn was of course a Tubbercurry footballer in the late 70’s early 80’s and there is talk of Fr. John fielding for Tourlestrane next year. Interesting times ahead perhaps if both men can take time from their pastoral duties.

Well done to Eilish Corry of Carrigeen, Ballina Road on her recent efforts to raise over €500 for North West Hospice through a coffee morning she held recently at her home.

Community Notes 9th February 2009 [ 11 February 2009 ]

As the local elections for Sligo Co. Council are fixed for early June, attention has turned in recent times to the fact that there is no candidate declared to run so far who actually resides in the town of Tubbercurry. The 4 sitting councillors all reside outside Tubbercurry, and while they are in town on a daily basis going about their electoral duties, the question has been raised in many recent discussions about the fact that no town resident is in the field. Joe Cawley a hotelier and town resident sat on the council for over 30 years and represented all town residents excellently. Electorial boundaries have changed for this election which includes all Gurteen/Monasteraden area and excludes Coolaney and Ballinacarrow with the result that the Gurteen area will be seeking more representation. Fine Gael and Fianna Fail have re-nominated their sitting candidates and the evergreen Independent Margaret Gormley will also be running. Many local discussions have centred on the possibility of an independent candidate resident in town running. Clubs and societies have also discussed a type of Community candidate. As we approach the election in the coming months more thought and discussion will inevitably centre on this issue.

Tubbercurry and District Active retirement Association members are now planning their programme for the coming year. We are very grateful to them for all their help and interest in our Association over the past six years. Next meeting will be at 8 pm in the local Health Centre on Tuesday, February 17th and a full attendance of members would be appreciated. Membership Fee of €10, which includes insurance and affiliation fees to FARA is now due. New members are very welcome and membership of all Active Retirement Groups is open to men and women.

Having been away for 15 years, Juliette must adjust to her new surroundings, while those around her have to come to terms with the dark secret of her absence. "That rare masterpiece of a film that will live within your soul long after the closing credits." Kim Voynar, Cinematical Admission 8 Euro (includes membership) - Concessions 6 Euro - Book of 6 tickets available for 40 Euro. Full details and brochure can be found on www.cinemanorthwest.com Cinema North West Listing - ONE WEEK AHEAD - for Feb 17 - 19th Saviours Dir: Ross Whitaker & Liam Nolan 2007 Ireland 81 mins Cert: PG The directors spent two years filming three young boxers from the Dublin club, St. Saviours Olympic Boxing Academy. Two canny coaches take on three students' talents and personal dramas; Abdul, an asylum seeker from Ghana, battles to stay in Ireland; Dean, a local lad from the flats, struggles with injury before the Olympics, and Darren Sutherland, a prodigious talent of Irish-Caribbean heritage, has to choose between boxing and university. This is a wonderful little film. Better than fiction, this film plays out the real life drama of the fighting Irish - 3 boxers in the St. Saviours Boxing Academy in Dublin - and their battles to stay in the game, from personal issues as well as with their technique and skill.

Please note one change to the programme - Bradán Players, Leixlip present 'The Faith Healer' by Brian Friel on the closing night, Saturday, 14th March. This is an ideal ending to the festival as Brian Friel celebrates his 80th birthday in 2009 and it is fitting that the Western Drama Festival programme for this year should include one of his plays and, as it happens, one which hasn't been seen on the stage in Tubbercurry for some time. It is also worth noting that the winners of both the Open and Confined sections last year both make a welcome return to defend their titles at this year's festival, KATS (Knocknacarra Amateur Theatre Group) from Galway and the Cloonacool Players respectively. Both groups will this year present plays by Irish playwrights. Cloonacool will be bringing us their production of the classic John B. Keane play 'Sive' and KATS present 'The Pillowman' by Martin McDonagh, a black comedy written in 2003. Like John B. Keane, Martin McDonagh's plays have proven very popular with drama groups and audiences alike. Drama followers can look forward to another great festival of drama for nine nights running in early March. Booking @ Killorans' Main St. will open closer to the festival. Tel 071-9185679. Nightly Admission €12.00 / Concession €10.00 / Season Tickets €70.00. .

The death occurred on Jan. 30th last of Kathleen Johnston (nee Brennan) of Cloonara, Lavagh. Aged 69, Kathleen had been ill for the last 2 months and had spent Christmas in hospital. Kathleen and her husband Johnny had celebrated their golden Jubilee just a few months ago when she was in great health. Once their family of 8 children were reared Kathleen returned back to work and spent nearly 25 years working in Abbott from the mid 70's to the late 90's. A most friendly and neighbourly lady, Kathleen will be missed by all who knew her. Her remains reposed at the house of her son Tom and removal took place on Sunday Feb. 1st to the Church of the Sacred Heart Mullinabreena. Burial took place the following day in Court Abbey cemetary. She is survived by her loving husband Johnny, daughter Mary, sons Gerry, Tom, Ollie, Padraic, Kevin, Brendan, Peter, grandchildren, in laws and many friends. May she rest in peace.

The Johnston family were bereaved on the double last week as the death took place of Sr. Bridget Johnston in Los Angeles. Born and reared in Carrentubber, Tubbercurry, Sr. Bridget spent most of her life doing missionary work abroad. She was sister to Johnny Johnston, Cloonnarara, Kathleen McCarrick, Doomore, Margaret McIntyre Leitrim North and Eddie Johnston U.K. Burial took place in L.A. May she rest in peace.

Snooker tables in St Brigid's Hall. Snooker has been played in St Brigid's Hall for a very long number of years. However, in the past few years, its popularity has declined and the current Hall Committee have made a couple of efforts to restart the snooker club, but without success. The Hall since its refurbishment two years ago has become a hive of community of activities and is being used continuously by various groups and organisations and space is now at a premium. The old snooker room has been fully refurbished but, because the snooker tables are there, it cannot be used for any other purpose. There would undoubtedly be a significant demand for the use of this room if the snooker tables were removed. With that in mind, the St Brigid's Hall Committee are seriously considering disposing of the two snooker tables so that the snooker room could be used more productively and more often for the benefit of the community. However, before making a final decision, the Hall Committee would be quite happy to hear representations from any person as to why the snooker tables should be retained. If anyone has firm proposals for the retention of the snooker tables on the basis that they would be actively used on an ongoing viable basis, then that person might contact any member of the Hall Committee to express their views. The matter will be again discussed at the next Hall Committee meeting and, if anyone has any views, they might contact any member of the Hall Committee in advance of same.

Tubbercurry Photography Course Following the successful photography course, run by David Booth and hosted by Paul Murphy of Murphy's Hotel in Tubbercurry, an exhibition of the most highly-commended photos from the course will be held at Murphy's starting on Friday 6th February at 7.30p.m. and will run for two weeks. Starting as absolute beginners, and yet to conquer their Nikons or Pentax manuals for digital cameras, after 8 intensive weeks of tuition the students have become confident and creative photographers. Amongst the students highly commended are John Doyle of Sligo; he will surely succeed in his ambition to become a sports photographer. Willing to stand at the touchline of rain and windswept matches, he is eager to follow his chosen career and feels that one is never too old, nor too young to learn more. Irene Fitzsimons, of Ballina Road, Tubbercurry, has shown that, along with work and family, given the time she can produce imaginative and creative work, especially landscapes, just see her photo of Lough Talt so different from the many taken every day of the year. Paul Murphy, who is to be thanked most royally for the use of his premises for the course, found time to be a student too - he has an eye for subject matter, landscape and portraits. Others taking the course are to be commended for their work and their skills. This first photography course for absolute beginners, dealt not only with digital but film cameras, and covered a wide range of subjects from portrait to landscape, still life to night shots. A second course is now underway, and a third one will commence in mid-February. All enquiries to David Booth on 071 918 6930 or 086 890 3257.

Community Notes - Wednesday 28th January 2008 [ 28 January 2009 ]

Local people are up in arms at the revelation recently that the N17 upgrade and Tubbercurry by-pass is unlikely to be completed in the next seven years.  In a detailed report in last weeks edition of the Sligo Champion written by Harry Keaney, local people read in disbelief at the statement made by a senior Sligo Co. Council engineer that the upgrade was unlikely for another 7 years.  This revelation was made in a reply to  question at the January meeting of the council from local councillor Michael Fleming.  This response beggars belief and local people and the business community wonder how the region can be let down so badly.  At various times over the last number of years local councillors have brought up this issue but now that the country is in the depths of a recession it looks as if we are going to wait awhile longer.

The death occurred on Jan. 2nd last of Mrs. Jane Coleman late of Doocastle at the house of her son Paddy.  In her late 80’s, Jane had lived with her son Paddy and his family in recent years and had been in good form until a few days before her death.  Wife of the late Pierce Coleman, she was a popular elderly member of the local community.  Her remains reposed at home prior to removal to Church of the Sacred Heart, Bunninadden on Jan. 3rd.  Burial took place the following day in Doocastle cemetery.  She is survived by her sons Paddy and Michael, daughter in law Colette, grandchildren and friends, to whom sympathy is extended.  May she rest in peace.

The death occurred on Jan. 22nd last of Jimmy O’Hara late of Rhue, Tubbercurry.  Aged 62, Jimmy was a popular member of the local community.  He worked in the construction trade most of his life and his employers over the years included many local building contractors.  He was also a man that made himself available for casual work at any time if he was able.  His brother Packie died just a few months ago.  His remains reposed at the Coen funeral home on Saturday last Jan. 24th prior to removal to Tourlestrane Church,  Burial took place the following day after solemn requiem Mass in Rhue cemetery, just 200 yards from Jimmy’s home.  Jimmy is survived by his brother John Joe, nephew Michael, friends and relatives, all to whom sympathy is extended.  May he rest in peace.

Sympathy is extended to Alphie Kerins, Doocastle on the recent death of his brother James from Cloonahinchin, Bunninadden.

North Connacht College Tubbercurry has announced a new programme of evening courses for adults in Spring 2009 and the menu certainly looks interesting.  There is a variety of Computer courses for beginners, improvers and advanced levels, Photography, Beauty therapy & Flower arranging.  There is also a confidential free scheme for adult literacy and numeracy, plus conversational Irish for parents and conversational French.   This could be an ideal opportunity to learn the ‘cúpla focail’ and with a trip coming up to Tubbercurry’s French twin town Viarmes, the conversational French course could be ideal for those thinking of going to Viarmes.  Enrolment starts on Thursday Jan. 29th 8-9p.m. and further info. from the college Ph. 071-9185035

Cinema North West. The Spring Season starts Thursday 5th Feb at 8-10pm in Teach Laighne Car park.  Spring is around the corner, but the nights are still long and still cold. What better way to kick off February than with a trip to the movies?  Opening Film - Linha de Passe, the story of a Brazilian family centred round the eldest boy, who, along with thousands of other hopefuls, wants to try out for a professional soccer team. The resilience, of the entire family, gives rise to true faith in keeping hope alive, whatever the odds.

Community Notes - Wednesday 7th January 2009 [ 07 January 2009 ]

Tubbercurry has returned to normal after the Christmas and New Year break and the schools re-open from January 7th.

The beautiful dry crisp weather over the holiday season was much appreciated by everybody so that they could get out walking and visiting without travel difficulties.

Quite an amount of visitors got home to visit their families and friendships were renewed after the various Church Ceremonies and in the local hostelries over Christmas.

Local businesses over Christmas certainly felt the effects of the international recession and all are in agreement that 2009 will be a tough year for business.  It is therefore more important than ever that the local community keeps their business locally so that we can all get through forthcoming tough times together.

The peaceful death of Sr. Veronica Gannon, Marist Convent, Tubbercurry, took place on 18th December in the loving care of her community.

A native of Elphin, Co. Roscommon, Sr Veronica entered the Marist Congregation in Carrick on Shannon in 1942.  After teaching training, she spent most of her career in Tubbercurry, Charlestown and Carrick on Shannon.  She also spent some time in Detroit USA, and England.  Sr. Veronica taught in the Marist Secondary school in Tubbercurry from 1951 to 1958 and later returned in 1963 to become Principal of the Secondary School, then a Boarding school, for three years.  She taught English, Latin, History, and Irish.  She was also an inspirational Art teacher and had the daunting task of painting many of the sets for the Operas frequently staged in the school at that time.  Following her retirement from teaching in Carrick on Shannon, Sr Veronica moved to a small Marist Community in Belfast where she devoted ten years to parish work.  Her kindness and great humanity endeared her to people everywhere.  She kept contact with her past pupils in all corners of the globe and in recent years she mastered the email and her fan mail grew!.

Sr. Veronica’s final years were spent in Tubbercurry where she greatly enjoyed the Active Retirement group and also led Marist Laity prayer groups in Bunninadden and Tubbercurry.  Her great love of Mary, Mother of God and also her Marist Congregation was the driving force of all her endeavours.  The Marist Sisters have been helping the South Sligo Community for over a hundred years and have become corner stones of local society.  Every death of a member of the Marist community is a major loss to society but a death of a person such as Sr. Veronica is irreplaceable.

We extend sympathy to here Marist Community, her sister Sr. Christina, Marist Convent, Detroit, her nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.  Ar dheis De go raibh a hanam dílis.

The local Active Retirement Association will resume activities during the week beginning January 12th with a showing  of the film 'The Great Gatesby' in Teach Laighne, courtesy of the Library staff, on Tuesday, 13th, at 3 pm for our Book Club members and any other members interested.  Our Exercise programme, conducted by Antoinette Roddy, restarts at 3 pm on Thursday, 15th; Indoor Bowling on Monday 19th at 11.15 am and 2.15 pm  and our usual Tuesday night meetings at 8 pm in the Health Centre will commence on the 20th.  We wish a happy and blessed New Year to all our members and friends.

The peaceful death occurred on December 27th last of Harry McCarrick, late of Cloonbanniff, Lavagh at the age of 97years.  A character of great renown and a spirit rarely equalled, Harry was a warm and lovable person and a light for everybody to follow.  His remains reposed at his home and at the Morahan funeral home on the days prior to his burial in Court Abbey graveyard.

Sympathy is extended to his wife Bridget and to his children, grand-children and great grandchildren.  A full obituary to Harry will be published shortly.

The peaceful death occurred on December 29th at St. John’s Hospital, Sligo of Patrick (Paddy) McCarrick, late of Moyox, Cloonacool and formerly of Mount Taffe.

Aged 76, Paddy had been hospitalised for the last year but was in good health up until then.

He was a regular visitor to town to do the shopping both from his time living in Cloonacool & Mount Taffe.

Paddy farmed all his life on his small hill farm at Mount Taffe and spent some time working with the Forestry Department.

His remains reposed in the Morahan funeral home and removal took place to St. Michaels Church Cloonacool.  Burial took place to Kilmactigue Cemetary on New Years Eve.  Sympathy is extended to Paddy’s sisters Kathleen & Elizabeth, brother in law, friends and cousins.  May he rest in Peace.

Wicklow and formerly of Tubbercurry.  Born in 1925, son of the late Dr. John A Flannery, Herbert as a young man emigrated to Australia after World War Two and spent a number of years farming in Australia before returning to Ireland when buying a farm in Co. Wicklow. He brought back his loving Australian wife Maureen and there they lived for the rest of their lives while rearing their seven children.  Funeral took place over Jan. 2nd and 3rd in Co. Wicklow.  Herbert enjoyed his visits back to his native County Sligo as often as time allowed and he is survived by his family Mike, Sean, Kieran, Jimmy, Garry, Maurice and Mary, grandchildren, in-laws, brothers Oliver and Sean in Tubbercurry, sister Sr. Carmel Mary, nephews, nieces and friends.  May he rest in peace.

Community Notes - Wednesday 10th December 2008 [ 10 December 2008 ]

The All Ireland One Act Drama Festival was held in Tubbercurry over the December 5th – 7th week-end and it was a fantastic success. Twelve plays held over 5 sessions to packed houses was an event to remember for all those that could attend. Hundreds of visiting drama enthusiasts from all over Ireland were hosted in fantastic style and were given a weekend to remember. Frost filled the air on a cold, clear winter’s evening as a transformed St. Brigid’s Hall at the heart of Tubbercurry became a wonderful theatre space from 5th to 7th December. There was a palpable sense of excitement on Friday evening as the opening of the festival drew near. Santa had arrived in town, the Christmas lights were switched on and Holy Family National School Choir, ably directed by their teacher Cara Burke, had entertained the large gathering with their carol singing. The stage was set for the 2008 All Ireland One Act Drama Finals.
Joint chairpersons, Billy Kilgannon and Eamonn Gallagher welcomed one and all and introduced special guests Eileen Mooney, National Chairperson of ADCI (Amateur Drama Council of Ireland), who spoke eloquently, expressing her delight to be in Tubbercurry, Loren Harnett, National Chairperson of the DLI (Drama League of Ireland) and Séamus Kilgannon, Sligo County Council, their Arts Service being the main sponsor of the Finals.
Thirty young people from Tubbercurry and surrounding area then performed the opening piece of theatre prior to the first of the competing groups. Created and directed by Kellie Hughes of Blue Raincoat Theatre, this was a piece of pure theatrical magic. Tightly choreographed and beautifully lit with fantastic costuming and sound effects, this twelve minute piece set the tone for a terrific weekend of theatre and the twelve drama groups who had qualified to perform in the Finals did not disappoint. Well done to everyone involved in what was a truly spectacular showcase. Members of County Sligo Youth Theatre presented some highly imaginative and inventive improvisational theatre on the Friday and Saturday nights during the main interval and again, many thanks to these talented young people and to their director, Jean-Marie Perinetti. In the words of Loren Harnett on the closing night of the festival, the future for drama in our region is incredibly bright. The DLI motto ‘Inspiring Excellence in Theatre’ was borne out in Tubbercurry over the weekend, he also said, referring too to the great sense of community he had felt during his visit to Tubbercurry.

Tubbercurry’s own Phoenix Players were first on stage following the opening ceremony with ‘Plaza Suite’ by Neil Simon. The packed audience enjoyed the many comic moments which were brought to life with great skill by the two main actors, Tom Walsh and Ursula Brennan, ably supported by Kieran Brennan and Gráinne Brennan, in what was a hugely entertaining production.

There followed, over the next two days and nights, a further eleven productions, all of a very high standard and brought to life on the stage in St. Brigid’s Hall by eleven talented drama groups from as far afield as Dublin, Cork and Wexford. Two groups qualified from Connacht, our own Phoenix Players and Crooked Wheel Productions from Leitrim. Full houses were testimony to the enduring popularity of live drama.

Tone Cold Sober, the award winning barbershop choir based in Strandhill, entertained the audience with great gusto before the winners were announced and the festival officially closed. This was their first visit to Tubbercurry and hopefully it won’t be their last. Star of the choir was local man Kieran Lundy.

Following the closing ceremony, before adjudicator Tony Rushforth announced the winners and presentations were made, the twelve mentors who had looked after the groups came on stage wielding shields beautifully designed by Maura Selfe and her pupils from St. Attracta’s Community School. Having adjudicated at the Western Drama Festival in 2005, Tony Rushforth had already said on the opening night how honoured he was to be invited to preside over these Finals and in his opening remarks before announcing the winners, he reiterated this, thanking everyone involved for the tremendous welcome and support shown to him. He said that he had witnessed some work on the stage of the most extraordinarily high standard and that much of what he had seen would remain with him for a very long time.

All in all, a memorable weekend of drama in Tubbercurry.  Sincere thanks to all involved, far too many to list here but it was a huge community effort and the work and great level of cooperation and community spirit all paid off. The organizing committee sincerely appreciates all the help, sponsorship, support and hard work given by so many. Finally, pencil in the Western Drama Festival – the 66th year – 6th to 14th March 2009. It won’t be long coming round.

‘Go Local’  is the title to IFA promoted campaign nationwide. Its whole trust is for the people to do business locally to keep money in the local community. The large grocery chain or shops in Northern Ireland will not come down to South Sligo to sponsor a drama festival, a girls football team, a school set of jerseys, St. Vincent de Paul or Tubbercurry Tidy Towns. It is the local business community and local people who time and time again put their hand in their pockets to keep local organisations going. In these times of difficult economic circumstances the local business must be supported. Do your shopping locally between now and Christmas – it will mean such a lot to small business – indeed it could mean difference between them staying in business and calling it a day because of financial circumstances. Do your part between now and Christmas – Go Local.

Film : Jigs on Reel  – a Special Compilation of Two Archive Music Films by IFI; O'Donoghue's Opera - a wonderfully rare opportunity to see Ronnie Drew and The Dubliners, in 1965, in a hoot of a tale, followed by Flea Ceoil which examines the resurgence of traditional Irish music in the 60's.

Jigs on Reel  – O Donoghue’s Opera 1965, Ireland, 37 min, Cert: Club Dir: Kevin Sheldon Cast: Ronnie Drew and The Dubliners O'Donoghue's Opera' is Ireland’s first musical film. A mock opera made in 1965 which ran into financial difficulties before it was properly completed—but has since gathered cult status. The hilarious film stars Ronnie Drew and his band of bohemian merrymakers, The Dubliners. This tongue-in-cheek film has the flavour of an Irish Spaghetti Western and captures the spirit of Dublin camaraderie like no other work before or since: the Guinness, the music, the wit and the grit, it’s all there in abundance.

Last week we reported on the Rugby exploits of John O’Brien who lined out for the Connacht Rugby team  v Portugal who’s mother Ann (Hannigan)  hails from Tubbercurry.  This week we report on the Gillespie brothers, Simon & Paul who live in Sligo with their Tubbercurry born father Peter and mother Marguerite, Simon attends University College Dublin (Belfield) and Paul is in Trinity College.  Both are accomplished rugby players, being ex Sligo Grammer School and Sligo Rugby club players.  They played against each other in the Annual Colours match last week and with Trinity winning narrowly 20 – 18.  Their father Peter and all uncles John, Tommy and Padraic played Gaelic football with Tubbercurry during the 1970’s and 80’s and it can be only assumed their genetic make up is  such that they can turn their hand to any sport.  Watch out in the rugby columns for their names as they enter the ranks of senior club rugby.  Of course proud father and uncles are all claiming the credit for putting the youngsters on the road to success.

Girls U-14 GAA Team The Tubbercurry team play against St. Mary’s in the county final on this wed. evening Nov. 19th at 7.30p.m. in Tourlestrane.  Played under floodlights, this fine stadium at Tourlestrane lends much to the occasion for all players of all ages.  Come out to support your local team as they are the basis for not only football teams but also society of the future.

The death occurred recently of David Barnes of Kileen Cottage, Cashel South, Tubbercurry after a long illness.  In his late 60’s, Dave and his wife Lee

came to Kileen in 1993 after they bought the old Killeen Cottage and some land, the home of the late Ms. Kathleen Hunt.  Dave & Lee were supposed to retire to country life from Norfolk, England, but the farming hobby so consumed Dave that he put much of his energy and life for the next 15 years, firstly into building a beautiful new home and then developing his farm after acquiring adjoining land.  They also got time to run a furniture business from their home to raise money for charity. Dave had been involved in the music business with top pop groups in the UK in the 1970’s and had also a transport business prior to his move to Ireland.  Lee is a highly qualified architect and professional in various spheres and both put their expertise to good use as they built a new life in Cashel.  Since their move they built up many friendships in the Curry and Tubbercurry areas.  Over the last 12 months Dave had been ill but his spirits were always good until his death.  His remains reposed at St. Teresa’s funeral home Curry and burial took place at Bunacranagh cemetery.  Sympathy is extended to Daves wife Lee, sons Darren & Paul and also many foster children whom Dave & Lee had looked after over the years.

Always a friendly, courteous and charitable human being, Dane will be greatly missed by his wife and extended family. May he rest in Peace.

Sympathy is extended to Eileen & Michael Kelly and their family of Lovers Lane on the recent sudden death of Eileen’s sister Bridie Higgins or Sr. Martine in Strokestown.  Sr. Martine was a Mercy Convent Sister and had been teaching mainly in Co. Roscommon for most of her adult life.  Her sudden death leaves a big void not only with her immediate family but with her religious colleagues and community of Strokestown where she was so popular.  May she rest in peace.

Congrats to Tubbercurry Ladies U-18 GAA team who won the Co Sligo B Championship on Sunday last beating Drumcliff.  Played in Curley Park Sligo in terrible weather conditions the Tubbercurry team made light of the conditions and built up a good lead in the first half when playing with wind advantage. This is the first silverware at County level that the Tubbercurry ladies have won. The Tubbercurry club have been slow to cater for ladies football and have not yet been able to field a senior ladies team but that should change over the next few years as this present crop of lady footballers mature. Cinema North West The film for Thursday 23rd is Happy-go-lucky – Uk / 2008 118 mins Director Mike Leigh – A portrait of a relentless optimist, that transcends sentiment and cliché when Poppy, a cheery north London school teacher embarks on a new romance.  But can her irrepressible good humour be sustained?  A contemporary comedy-drama, (a colourful change for the mostly dark Mike Leigh), that aches with truth, yet is delightfully light-footed.  “A good blast of fresh air that sweeps you off your feet”.  Holly Grigg-Spall, channel 4 film – kindly sponsored by Austins Restaurant, The Square, Tubbercurry.  The mobile cinema located beside Teach Laighne is a wonderful evening’s entertainment and should be on your regular social evening schedule.  For this Autumn the time has been changed to an 8pm start (Teach Laighne Car Park) to give you plenty of time for a meal or drink locally afterwards.

Watch out for Foreign Lottery scams.  Many people locally have received letters telling them they have won large amounts of money in foreign lottos and asking the ‘winner’ to forward money to have the cheque forwarded.
Under no circumstances should you send money or give your bank account details to anybody in scams like this.  If it sounds too good to be true then it probably is a scam.  The fraudsters tell you not to say anything to anybody to protect your winnings – this is just so that you are not advised properly.
Watchout – nobody gives away money for nothing.

Halloween horrors will be abounding in Tubbercurry on Friday 31st October as the Annual Samhain Street Carnival Parade and Fireworks display takes place in the town centre.

This parade is now firmly established on the town calendar with successful parades having been organised for the last few years.

Children will be dressed up and face painted to add to the atmosphere and children are asked to gather at St. Bridgets Hall from 6.30pm onwards.  The parade commences at 8pm and will march through town centre to the sound of samba drums and scary music.  Witches and elves will be aplenty.  Bring along all the children and grannys and granddads to add to the atmosphere.

Civic Reception By Sligo County Council For Golf Club

A historic day for the local golf club was held recently as the fruits of hard work, enthusiasm and combined efforts by committees and members of the club, the people of South Sligo and concerned people in the Greater Birmingham area were acknowledged as the club were accorded a Civic Reception by Sligo County Council. This was in recognition of their work in helping provide The Irish Welfare & Information Centre in Birmingham with a 58,000-euro wheelchair adapted mini bus.

The day began with the arrival of emigrants from all over Ireland who left home in the 1940s and travelled to many parts of the UK. They attended 11.30 am mass with Rev. Fr. Pat Lynch PP. Fr. Lynch who welcomed all to the mass and hoped they would enjoy their visit to South Sligo. After mass locals mingled with the visitors, many of them confided that they had not been home for over forty-five years.

Mass was followed by a reception in Teach Laighne by Cathaoirlach of Sligo County Council, Mr. Jude Devins who in his address welcomed all to Teach Laighne and commended Tubbercurry Golf Club and all concerned with the project and its huge success.  He also welcomed the visitors from the UK and hoped they had enjoyed their time in the West. He complimented the golf club on its efforts and foresight in bringing the project to fruition.

Club Captain Mr. John Gillespie, in his address, welcomed all to the gathering and thanked Sligo County Council for according the club such an honour and he was delighted for all concerned with the club’s success in helping provide the bus for the people of Birmingham.

Project Co Ordinator Harold Mc Manus then spoke and welcomed Cathaoirlach Sligo County Council, Clergy, MEP, TDs, Senators, club captain Mr. John Gillespie, founder members of Tubbercurry Golf Club, committee members, past captains, past presidents and members of Tubbercurry Golf Club, members of local Chamber of Commerce and friends to the reception. He outlined a brief history of the ‘Fr. Joe Taaffe Memorial Bus’ project, which began in 2004 and on behalf of the club he thanked all who contributed in any way to its success and suggested that this was the perfect setting for the final phase of the effort.  He lauded the efforts of the golf club, committees, members and friends who were the vehicle in promoting and running the project and who took on the mammoth task over a number of years.  He thanked all committees for their support and patience during the years of the fundraising.  He confirmed that the effort had already been recognised by the Mayor Of Birmingham in May of this year at The Irish Welfare and Information Centre in Birmingham at a special event to mark the opening of new offices at Deritend, Birmingham.  Members of the club were present at this event  The bus has already been in use bringing invalid people from their accommodation to St. Eugene’s Centre in Digbeth once a week to the ‘Tuesday’ club for a proper meal and a bit of fun and craic. For the more agile people it takes them to an allotment provided by Birmingham City Council where a bit of exercise is gained ‘digging a few furrows’!.  Rev.Fr Pat Lynch & Rev. Kathy Southerton blessed the bus at the club and it was then formally handed over to Irish Welfare & Information Centre representative Mr. Eamonn Duffy by Club Captain John Gillespie at a function held in the golf club immediately afterwards.  Mr. Duffy complimented the golf club on its endeavours and thanked all concerned for all their work in providing the bus.  He spoke at length of the great use the bus had been already and the great news it had been for the many incapacitated people who could look forward to getting around to functions in the future. A host of local musicians provided the entertainment for the afternoon with guest acts from some of the visitors.  All enjoyed the visit immensely and watched both All Ireland Finals.  It was then back to Castlebar where they stayed for the duration of their visit to the West: compliments of The Mayo Emigrant Liaison Committee, a group who have already brought over a thousand people home for short breaks every year  to visit their homeland.  All enjoyed a wonderful day!

The Tubbercurry Senior Team were defeated in the County Final last Sunday at Markievicz Park by a very good Eastern Harps team.

Tubbercurry put up a good performance but the more experienced Harps team proved too strong in the end.  This is a young Tubbercurry team and we look forward to many more years of good football entertainment from this squad.  Many of them are now back at College and life goes on.  The club is continually looking for new members and people that moved into the area are always welcome to get involved.

Tubbercurry’s Senior Football Team is back in the County final for the first time since 1995 and is taking place on this coming Sunday October 5th. The team beat Coolera /Strandhill in a replay of the semi final on Sunday last in Tourlestrane. There is now great excitement building up locally as this relatively young team prepare for their first final. The opponents on Sunday is the great Eastern Harps Club and indeed when Tubbercurry last played in finals in 1993 and 1995 it was the same Eastern Harps opponents who were victorious on both of those occasions. Harps will be strong favourites to lift the title on this occasion but that will not worry the young Tubbercurry team as they prepare for the big day. Tubbercurry last won the Owen B Hunt Cup in 1991 so 17 years of a wait is an eternity for some people. In the period 1976 – 1995 Tubbercurry contested 12 county finals including the 1976 one, but prior to that it had been 19 years ( 1957) since Tubbercurry had won the championship so periods of drought followed by good years is nothing new to Tubbercurry. Hopefully this year will be the start of a new era of success for the Tubbercurry Club. Flags of support are making an appearance locally  but the short one week lead in to the final leaves a lot to be done over the next few days. Tubbercurry GAA Club is continually looking for new members and supporters. New residents in the area are more than welcome to come along with children or teenagers to start training. In the meantime all roads lead to Markievicz Park on this Sunday for what will hopefully be a memorable county final. Best wishes are extended to all officials and players involved.
Motorists continue to experience frustration on the Sligo road as increased volumes of traffic and slow moving agricultural vehicles can cause back ups of 50 cars or more on a regular basis. Between Tubbercurry and Collooney there are only limited occasions when overtaking of slow vehicles is possible and road users regularly take chances in overtaking which result in serious accidents. This is a national route way linking Sligo to Galway, but is certainly one of the most dangerous stretches of national route way in the country. Despite an economic downturn, continued pressure must be put on our public representatives to get the long promised new road built without delay.

All Ireland One Act Drama Finals in St. Brigid’s Hall, Tubbercurry from Friday 5th to Sunday, 7th December.  More details of this hugely anticipated national event in next week’s issue.

Best Wishes are extended to Deirdre & Paraic Gillespie, Powellsboro on the recent birth of a baby boy, Ruairi. This new baby is a brother for Ciara and Aoife and will be a potential Tubbercurry footballer within a few years. He will certainly be the youngest Tubbercurry supporter at Sundays County final.

A service of Harvest Thanksgiving will be held in St Georges Church, Tubbercurry on Sunday 5th October at 7pm. All are welcome
