South Sligo Summer School 13th - 19th July [ 07 July 2008 ]
It’s all systems go for the 22nd South Sligo Summer School of traditional music, song and dance which will take place in Tubbercurry, Co. Sligo from the 13th – 19th July.
The people of Tubbercurry look forward every year to the influx of people into their town and surrounding area for what is locally known as ‘Music Week’. For those of you who haven’t yet had the opportunity to visit Tubbercurry during the South Sligo Summer School, it is one of those things you must do – it is a week like no other in so many ways – words are not enough to do justice to the direct experience – that inexpressible feeling of joy and togetherness when a simply great session happens and goes on into the early hours – or that moment of pure genius and inspiration when, at a recital or concert two or more musicians who may or may not have met before, click and play magical music together. There is so much about the South Sligo Summer School that cannot be easily put into words but, so that you can have an idea of the planned activities for the week, here is a brief summary.
Daily classes will be held in several instruments with beginners catered for in the following classes: tin whistle, uilleann pipes (beginner sets for hire - to be pre-booked - see below for contact number), bodhran, harp, sean nós singing, traditional singing, set dancing and sean nós dancing. In a new departure this year, participants – beginners and experienced singers and musicians alike - will also have the choice of a daily workshop in the ancient art of lilting. At the other end of the scale, experienced musicians can avail of master classes in fiddle, flute and tinwhistle. All classes are graded and other instruments taught include the button accordion, traditional guitar, concertina, banjo and piano accordion.
Set dancing has been a central feature of the summer school from the outset and with eight céilís featuring eight very different bands, this year promises to be a real gem of a week for all lovers of dance and céilí band music. Dancers can look forward to some great dancing on the original maple floor at St. Brigid’s Hall.
Daily classes in Set Dancing will also be held in St. Brigid’s Hall with the vastly experienced Pat Murphy and Betty McCoy at the helm. Dancers can look forward to a wonderful variety of sets during the week.
Brenda O’Callaghan, originally from Strokestown, Co. Roscommon, has been teaching Sean Nós Dancing classes at the summer school for the past number of years, with great success, and again this year she will give classes on Monday to Friday afternoons.
Brenda will be giving a talk on her own personal story of dancing and the influences on her style of danging on Friday afternoon at 3 o’clock before her last dancing class of the week.
This year’s series of daily lectures/illustrated talks begins on Monday afternoon with broadcaster and researcher Joe Byrne giving a talk on the music of Doocastle. Joe will also be performing the official opening duties at Killorans’ Traditional Bar & Restaurant on Sunday evening, 13th July at 8 o’clock. His visit to Tubbercurry will be eagerly awaited and his contribution will, no doubt, set the 22nd summer school off to a flying start.
The remaining lectures for this year include a presentation on Sean Nós Singing by Maití Joe Shéamuis Ó Fatharta, an illustrated talk on Fiddle masters past and present by one of the summer school tutors, Gerry Harrington and a talk on the music of the late Andy McGann to be given by his great friend and fellow musician Joe Burke.
So, quite a range of talks and presentations with lots of room for learning something new about our rich musical tradition and a chance to reflect on the music, life and times of some of the great musicians, singers and dancers who have gone before us.
Another central feature of the summer school is the opportunity for singers of all backgrounds to participate in daily classes where they can learn new material, explore the background to the songs, work on technique and listen to local and visiting traditional and sean nós singers. Many fine singers from every corner of the globe have participated in the sean nós singing class at Tubbercurry over the years and have learned a number of songs as Gaeilge at very short notice and to a high standard. Both singing classes’ contributions are one of the highlights of a packed recital programme during the week.
Last but not least, this year’s tribute concert is to the great musician, Harry McGowan. This concert will be held in St. Attracta’s Community School on Monday evening. Harry, from Carrowmore at the foot of Knocknashee is a wonderful musician and this is a night of music and celebration not to be missed.
All in all - the 22nd year of the South Sligo Summer School – a week to look forward to for participants and listeners alike. For further information on any aspect of this year’s summer school programme, please ring 071-9120912 (00-353-71-9120912 outside Ireland), email southsligosummerschool@eircom.net or check the school’s website www.sssschool.org.

Tubbercurry Tidy Towns – The Big Effort is On! -
The Tubbercurry Tidy Towns Committee would like to express their sincere gratitude to the businesses and residents of the town who in such a short time have undertaken fantastic individual and group work in getting the town looking so well at the moment.
The seemingly endless number of newly panted buildings, redesigned shop fronts and floral touches here and there are adding up to an impressive overall transformation. Take a bow – the town is really on its way. Indeed, if a causal observer was to arrive Tubbercurry at the moment there would be no obvious hint of any economic downturn in terms of how locals are individually and collectively beautifying the town. A positive face to the world is what Tubbercurry is showing, and while not to underplay the very real economic issues out there, this is the way forward. The Tidy Towns Committee salutes and thanks you all.
The national Tidy Towns judging panel will be arriving in Tubbercurry shortly so any last minute project you were planning to do with your shopfront or house – now is the time to do it. Every little effort will help in terms of moving Tubbercurry up the national points table.
Vigilance in terms of litter control is vital. We all have a social and statutory obligation to remove litter from outside our buildings. If you see a discarded piece of paper, pick it up. Waiting for “the other guy” to take care of such matters is not the only option. We all win, if we all chip in!
The Tubbercurrry Tidy Towns committee are currently in consultation with both Iarnród Éireann and Sligo County Council as part of the old train station redevelopment. The removal or reduction of the unsightly concrete bollards along the Circular Road will be a priority, as will finishing off the level cross gates upgrade.
The Tubbercurry Tidy Towns Group will have their next Litter Action Event at 6:30PM Tuesday, June 17th. Meet under the clock on Wolfe Tone Square. Equipment will be supplied. Everybody who wants to join in and lend a hand will be more than welcome.
Sligo County Council have commenced works at Wolf Tone Square to install a storm water pipeline from the surface water drain opposite Burkes garage to a new water system at the bottom of Humbert street. It is hoped that this will go a long way to resolving flooding problems which have occurred over the years in a number of business premises on the West side of the square. There will be a certain amount of traffic disruption while the works are ongoing but it will be for the long term good.
St. Brigid’s Hall Summer Camp - St. Brigid’s Hall is running a Summer Camp on Monday 21st and Tuesday 22nd July for 5-7 years, and on Wednesday 23rd, Thursday 24th and Friday 25th for 8-12 years. The camp will run from 10am-1.00pm, with a packed fun programme of Tang Soo Do martial art, multi sport games, Hip Hop dancing and basketball drills. This camp is supported by Sligo Sport and Recreation Partnership’s ‘Active Communities’ project, which is part financed by the EU Programmes Body for Peace and Reconciliation, administered locally by the Sligo County Council led taskforce. To book a place, or for further information, contact Bernie Reidy on 0879726341.
Tubbercurry Farmers Market - Preparation is now underway for the establishing of a Farmers Market in the centre of Tubbercurry town. The organisers of the market, working closely with Tubbercurry Chamber of Commerce representatives, hope to launch the market selling locally sourced and produced foodstuffs in early summer, 2008. To encourage and support local producers in reaching potential customers, a number of stalls have been reserved for new producers from the Tubbercurry/ South Sligo area. Anyone interested in becoming a stall holder is asked to contact the organisers at 071 91 47007 (after 6pm) for further information.
SLIGO’S WIN: London v Sligo, May 25 in Ruislip. A fantastic day was had by all Sligo supporters in Ruislip for the first round of the Connacht Senior Football Championship on Sunday, May 25. A great group of travelling supporters landed in London for the weekend festivities.
About 3,000 people attended the match. Local lads Brian Curran, Eamon
O’Hara, Stephen Gilmartin, Gary Gaughan and David Kelly gave a good
account of themselves. There was plenty of support from around south
Sligo, with fans making the journey from Ireland West Airport, Knock to
Stansted. Great entertainment was provided on both nights in Chiswick and
Cricklewood. Most fans stayed at the Chiswick Moran Hotel. Riverstown native James Galvin had the Mullin family from London playing at the Comb Rest on Saturday night, and Kiltima native John Clancy did a nice solo on whistle. The following day Minister Eamon O’Cuiv attended the match to watch his son play centre half back for the exiles. Unfortunately the match failed to excite and Sligo ran out easy winners. However, there was plenty to see and talk about after, as people who didn’t meet for sometime got together.
Tubbercurry man Tommie Gillespie was present with his entourage from the
south where he now lives. Bunnanadden men Sean Cunningham and John
Killoran, Flaveshill, caught up with all the news in the beer tent. Kilmactigue
native Seamus Gallagher had a bus load of supporters out from London on
Sunday for the game and the conductor sang for all the passengers. Ollie
Brennan, his sister Helen, the Mahers from Curry made a day of it. Ray
Leonard, James Murphy and Henry Moffat, Moylough were present. Later
that evening, fans returned to Ealing and Tommy Flynn’s Bar, where
Sligoman P J Duffy kept things floating. Glamorous girls Katherine, Grainne,
Lisa Marie and Vanessa from Dromore West had the place spell bound with
their charm and wit. Denis Gilligan, Cloonacool had a great time along with
Frank Gavaghan from Tourlestrane. On Sunday night in the Gattee Mor, big Tom McBride brought the curtain down on 50 years of entertainment at the famous Irish venue. The venue is now closing its doors in what must be the greatest period of Irish Showband music. In that time, thousands of Irish emigrants who travelled to Britain for employment and adventure had a centre of entertainment to match anything at home. Now that it has closed, perhaps something might come in and fill the gap for all those Irish boys and girls who leave home to live in Britain. Well done to Sligo and we look forward to the next outing against Mayo in Castlebar. No doubt the opposition will be a bit
stronger.

Local employers Basta is experiencing difficulties at present as their markets both at home in Ireland and abroad in Britain and Europe are hitting a rough patch.
Basta manufactures and supplies door and window locks and hinges, plus various other goods to the construction industry. The depressed state of the construction industry throughout Europe is the cause of the slow down in sales by Basta.
As a result some redundancies are imminent while much of the staff have been put on a 2 or 3 day week. Basta have experienced many difficulties before in their 50 year history and they are confident that this storm will also be weathered. Basta and its sister factory Tool and gauge were set up in the mid 1950’s by Gallagher family of Cashel just outside town and they have been proud flagship industries for the town since then. The local community is indebted to the workforce of these factories as their existence has prevented many people from emigration over the years. Everybody hopes the present difficulties will not last too long.

The wedding took place in glorious sunshine at the beautiful Lough Talt church and chief celebrant was Fr. Gerard Davey. The honeymoon was spent in Bulgaria and they will be living locally in Tubbercurry. Best wishes are extended to both for many years of happiness.
A new publication ‘Achonry and its Churches’ has just been released, written by Fr. Liam Swords. This is the forth in a series of history books on the Diocese of Achonry and will be a welcome addition to any shelf. This is a book of photographs rather than a lot of text and photographs of all churches and convents in the diocese are there.
It should be of special interest perhaps to those from the diocese who are living away from home and would make an ideal gift for any occasion. Priced at just €20 it is available through any of the priests of the diocese.

The Death occurred on May 10th last of Dermot Scully at his home at Gortnadrass Lavagh. Dermot had been ill for some considerable time but fought for life with admirable courage.
A native of Glasnevin in Dublin but with family roots in Co Sligo, Dermot was a true Dub and loved his native city and county. Dublin GAA matches were special occasions for him and the blue flag of Dublin flew out his home while his remains reposed. Since moving to Lavagh about 15 years ago, Dermot and his wife Noelle and his children got totally involved in Community life and Dermot was always generous with his time and expertise for the good of the community. Noelle was very involved with the phoenix players in Tubbercurry over the years and Dermot was very proud of her and her achievements. His remains reposed at his home at the foot of beautiful Knocknashee and funeral mass took place in the church of the sacred heart Mullinabrena. His remains were buried in Court Abbey Cemetery within view of his home at the foot of the hill. Sympathy is extended to his wife Noelle, children Eanna, Ciara, Sinead and Roisin, grand daughter, sister, Brothers and many friends. May Dermot rest in peace.

Flash flooding occurred again last Sunday night May 11th at Wolfe Tone Square when a heavy thunderstorm with accompanying rain caused sudden and extensive flooding to a number of business premises. Morahans Drapery shop, The May Queen and Killinaskully pubs, the Master Butchers and Bonanza all suffered when rain which could not be taken by storm water drains flooded in the front doors of these premises. This is the second time within twelve months it has happened and indeed it has been an ongoing problem for decades. Sligo Co. Council have put a lot of work into improving the stormwater outlets in this area in recent years but obviously more needs to be done. Stray dogs continue to be a problem in the area and the dog warden has visited South Sligo on a number of occasions recently. Sheep were killed a few weeks ago at Rhue and others were killed in the Tourlestrane area by these dogs. Tubbercurry Tidy Towns Project Springs into Action [ 27 April 2008 ]
The Tubbercurry Tidy Towns Group have commenced the 2008 project with a major community-wide clean up of the town and its approach roads. This will become an annual event forming part of an on-going plan to transform Tubbercurry's visual appearance and environment. Many exciting ideas are in process, which will be developed with the objective of maximising the potential of the town's environment, as well as move Tubbercurry up the national Tidy Towns points table. Among the recent initivites undertaken has been the hiring of a professional landscaping designer to develop an overall planting version for the town's future. The Tubbercurry Tidy Towns committee has also made personal contacts with the town's business community in regards to looking at their property/shopfront with a fresh eye and to undertake any visual improvements if needed. Not only to the main shop/buildings facades, but just as importantly near entrances and loading bays onto the Circular Road, which remains the main visual point of contact with Tubbercurry for passing motorists. With uncertain economic times looming ahead, it is vital that Tubbercurry put it's best side forward and work even harder to improve the visual image of the town.
