Sport & Recreation

Sporting life and recreation in general is fantastic in Tubbercurry.

Local G.A.A. Action

A wide range of clubs and societies along with contact numbers is available on this site and there should be something for everybody’s taste, regardless of your age, gender or ability.

The Active Retirement Group meet weekly outside holiday periods and their activities range from bowling to yoga and book classes / reading groups to swimming and day tours.

However at the other end of the age scale, children and youths are offered a wide range of activities including athletics, soccer and gaelic football, badminton, golf, drama, book clubs etc.

Lough Talt is a popular walking area

Walking is a simple form of exercise and a good range of walk circuits exists starting in town, going out through rural countryside and finishing in town. In addition for those that are a bit more adventurous, the Sligo Way is a series of longer treks, some of which go through the Ox Mountains, a few miles outside Tubbercurry.

Traditional Music is alive and well in Tubbercurry and the South Sligo Community.

The Annual South Sligo Summer School has now been running for over 20 years in Tubbercurry. This is a week of teaching/learning of traditional music in a wide variety of instruments.

Every year over 600 students congregate in Tubbercurry, usually the 2nd /3rd week in July with the goal of learning more and improving their traditional music skills.

Drama enthusiasts must get involved with the Phoenix Players, a drama group established in Tubbercurry for over 60 years. They usually do at least one production annually – one acts, three acts, pantomime etc and their motto is to get as much of the community as possible involved. They regularly perform on the Amateur Drama Festival Circuit nationwide each Spring and many awards have been won over the years by members of the Phoenix Players.

Tubbercurry Golf Club

Tubbercurry Golf Club is in existence since the 1930’s but they purchased and developed their present home in the early 1990’s and there is now a fine 9 hole course within walking distance of town centre.

A tough but fair course it will test golfers of all abilities. Membership is open to individuals and family rates are very attractive. Further details www.

The fisherman and hunter are also catered for locally. The South Sligo Anglers Club have preserves on the river Moy while Tubbercurry Gun Club and Cloonacool Gun Club are active in shooting, habitat development and vermin control locally.

The Old Fair Day is a traditional date in the local calendar (2nd Wednesday August) and many Tubbercurry people living abroad plan their holidays around this social traditional event.

In March each year the Western Drama Festival put on 10 nights of Amateur Drama at St. Bridget’s Hall by Groups from around Ireland. Not to be missed.
