History of Business & Industry in Tubbercurry
Tubbercurry has a long tradition of Business and Industry.
The first Major Industry in the Town can be traced back to
Basta Limited which was opened in the Town
in 1955 by the late Jim Gallagher, T.D. In Ireland of the
1950s’ Industrialisation was very much in it’s
infancy but the late Jim Gallagher who was a Native of the
Town and a T.D. for the Area promoted the development of an
Industry in the Town and Basta Limited was formed it’s
principle activity being the making of Door Locks and Door
furniture.
Very quickly it became apparent that to promote Industry
throughout the Region there was a necessity to create an expertise
in Toolmaking and out of this necessity Tool &
Gauge was formed again in the 1950s’. It is
heartening to think that both these Companies namely: Basta
Limited and Tool & Gauge Limited still carry on manufacturing
operations in the Town of Tubbercurry to this day. Tool &
Gauge has often been referred to as the “Father of all
Toolmakers”. While there are many Toolmaking Firms now
in operation throughout the length and breath of the Country
virtually every one of these Toolmakers can in some way trace
back their original existence to somebody who would have trained
in Tool & Gauge in Tubbercurry.
While Basta and Tool & Gauge were the first Major Industrial
operations in the Town the Industrial Output of the Town has
grown steadily over the Years and there are now a number of
major manufacturing and retail and service outlets operating
in the Town giving major employment. In that respect one of
the major Employers operating in the Town would be Connacht
Gold Co-Operative Society Limited whose Head Office
is situated at Ballina Road, Tubbercurry and who are the largest
Co-Op., Operating in the North West of the Country.
Many of the Businesses in the Town have been Businesses passed
on from generation to generation and a stroll down Teeling
Street will see many, many Businesses operating under the
same style or title that their predecessors did over 50/60
years ago.
Elsewhere on this website you will find a List
of Businesses and the services which are provided within
the Town and it would be fair to say that at this stage there
is very little in the nature of a service or a product which
cannot be sourced locally in Tubbercurry or it’s immediate
environs.
